One thing is certain: boredom doesn't stand a chance during your summer holiday in the nature park and glacier region! This is ensured by a varied program for the whole family. Kauni, the swift ibex, is the mascot of the Kaunertal and is here to help visitors of all ages get the most from summer in the Tyrolean mountains.
Family hikes in the Kaunergrat Nature Park
For little explorers, the Kaunergrat Nature Park in summer is a veritable adventure paradise! On Explorers Day, the little ones can walk along various adventure trails following the tracks of wild animals or discover the secrets of the Piller Moor. The entire family will enjoy exploring nature on the forest adventure trail with its hand-carved wooden animals.
Hike through the Gallruthstollen tunnel
During the summer months, a hike through the Gallruthstollen tunnel is offered weekly. You're going to want to put this on your agenda. It’s worth it: we promise! Especially if you are interested in the unique irrigation system of the Tyrolean Alps. The path initially leads along the slope channel before entering the 990 m long Gallruthstollen with just torches for light. An adventure for young and old, accompanied by the ancient legends of the region.
But that's not all! Afterwards, you'll cycle through a picturesque high valley to the quaint Gallruthalm mountain chalet. Then take the Dr. Angerer Panorama Trail back to the Falkaunsalm. Does this sound like just the adventure for you and your family? Sign up today and get ready for a fun day.
A walk-in crevasse as a special family experience
Keep a cool head on hot summer days! The Kaunertal Glacier is the ideal place for it. At 2,750 m above sea level, you'll not only have plenty of fresh mountain air to enjoy, but also a very special adventure for the whole family. The glacier crevasse, which is accessible to visitors, is a great spot to cool off near the glacier parking lot. Good footwear makes it easier to traverse the icy path marked with informative signs.
By the way: in July and August you can experience the allure of glacial ice from Monday to Friday on a free guided tour, lasting about 40 minutes. Meet at 11:00 on the sun terrace of the Weißseerestaurant. So what are you waiting for? Your children will be amazed by the icy experience in the height of summer in the Kaunertal!
Fendels for families in the Kaunertal
No need for mass tourism! Fendels is all about a laid-back, cosy experience year-round! The ski area, which is especially popular with families, turns into a summer adventure park with just as much charm. Experience nature and mountain landscapes on one of the many hikes from the valley station of the quad chair lift.
In addition, Fendels is a great place for you to...
- learn more about the local animal world on the pram-ready animal trail from the Stattelklause to Fendler Alm.
- experience different aspects of water at the barrier-free Bach am Moos nature playground
- watch wild animals up close in the outdoor enclosure run by the Schranz family.
- conquer the 3.4 km wild stream trail with its 30-meter suspension bridge on a mountain bike or downhill bike.
- take a mountain cart on nature trails through woods and meadows, even at night (once a week).
Modern family tip on the sidelines: the Locandy theme trails! Just download the free app to your smartphone. Your multimedia exploration tour of the nature park and glacier region can start with various themed trails in the Kaunertal and Fendels.

Miners’ Trail & Adlerblick Observation Platform
Let's trace the steps of Kaunertal’s miners. Centuries ago, the Kaunertal was a beehive of activity for miners seeking silver and copper due to the high ore content in the mountains. You can now put on your own helmet and carry a torch to explore an original mine and chip out some ore from the stone. You can then take a well-deserved break in the company of two miners.
Climbing paradise for the whole family
Not far from the Knappensteig, a rock hiding in a small, idyllic grove with the ringing name "Keilschrofen" hides. This Schrofen - (rock) as we say here in Tyrol - is ideally suited to make the first climbing attempts with our "hip" and highly trained mountain guide team. Weekly climbing courses for children and families are offered here from June to October.
Holderli Seppl Ferrata
More brave adventurers then dare to go to the Holderli Seppl via ferrata in the Fernergries. But do not worry: this via ferrata is ideal for sporty families and children. Under the expert guidance of the Kaunertal mountain guides you will climb the red rocks along the Rifflerbach. You will be rewarded at the end of the via ferrata with a breathtaking mountain panorama over the Kaunertal and the Weißseespitze in the background. Here you can truly feel the magic of the mountains ...
