Whether by car, rail, bus, or air, here you will find all the travel information you need to get to the Kaunertal.
There are a few important things to keep in mind:
- The motorways in Austria have tolls. If you drive without paying for a vignette, you will face high penalties. The vignettes are available at kiosks and petrol stations. They are valid for 10 days, 2 months, or for a full year.
- Vignettes are also compulsory for the Landecker Tunnel (you could drive the Piller Höhe/Gachenblick Pass instead).
- In winter, adequate equipment and snow chains depending on the weather are also required. Attention: winter tyres are compulsory in Austria from 1 November to 15 April!
- Austria also requires you to carry safety vests for every passenger who would have to leave the vehicle in case of a breakdown or accident.
- Wild camping outside of official sites is not permitted and may result in trespassing charges and fines under the Camping Act!

Arrival by train
With 33 direct connections daily and countless simple transfer connections, the most beautiful destinations in Tyrol are really easy to reach from many places in Germany. Often faster than by car. The train takes you relaxed and safely to your destination. Your own children under the age of 15 even travel free of charge (entry on the ticket is necessary).
Your destination station is Landeck-Zams. From there you can take the Postbus or taxi to Kaunertal, Kauns, Kaunerberg or Fendels.

On site: traveling by bus
Whether summer or winter - in the Kaunertal you are mobile and climate-friendly using public transport. Simply leave your car behind and use the ski or hiking buses in the nature park and glacier region.
Tip: free arrival with the Summercard
Every guest in Kaunertal receives a free Summercard from their accommodation. A travel voucher is available for free travel from the train station. Ask your landlord about it!

Already traveling by electric car?
No problem in Kaunertal! Many accommodations have already installed e-charging stations directly at their accommodations. There are also 2 public landing stations in the valley.
There are a few important things to bear in mind:
- There is a highway toll in Austria. If you are caught without a valid vignette, you have to pay heavy fines. The vignettes are available at kiosks and petrol stations. They are valid for 1 day, 10 days, 2 months or the whole year.
- The vignette requirement also applies in the Landeckertunnel (bypass possible)
- In Austria, winter tires are mandatory from November 1 to April 15, and you need appropriate equipment, including snow chains depending on the weather.
- Safety vests are also compulsory in Austria - for every passenger who leaves the car in the event of a breakdown or accident.
Digital Vignette for Austria: Be Well Prepared for Your Trip to the Tyrolean Oberland
For a stress-free trip, it’s a good idea to purchase the required vignette before you set out. The digital vignette is linked to your license plate and can be conveniently purchased online or at authorized sales locations.
Transition to the Digital Vignette
Starting December 1, 2026, only digital vignettes will be available for purchase for the 2027 vignette year. Sticker vignettes purchased prior to this date will remain valid through January 31, 2027. As of February 1, 2027, only the digital vignette will be valid.
Where can I buy the digital vignette?
You can purchase the digital vignette at the official ASFINAG toll shop or at authorized sales locations, such as gas stations, tobacco shops, automobile clubs, and vending machines.
When purchasing, be sure to enter your license plate number correctly and verify the desired validity period. Purchase your vignette well in advance of your trip, if possible.
What validity options are available?
The digital vignette is available in four versions:
- 1-day vignette
- 10-day vignette
- 2-month vignette
- Annual vignette
Important for online purchases: The 1-day and 10-day vignettes can be valid immediately. For digital 2-month and annual vignettes purchased online by private individuals, a 18-day waiting period generally applies. If purchased at an authorized retail location, this waiting period does not apply; the vignette can be valid immediately.
Please make sure your vignette is already valid before driving on a road requiring a vignette.
