Hiking under the stars
Night-time gatherings in the Kaunertal
A night-time hike in Austria's darkest place
Far from any light pollution, this spot offers a unique view of the Milky Way and thousands of stars.
Join us for some stargazing on a guided star hike or take a trip to one of our night-time observation spots and discover the universe with the naked eye or through binoculars.
An unforgettable experience for nature lovers and astronomy enthusiasts! Let yourself be enchanted by the magic of the night sky in the Tyrolean Kaunertal!
Immerse yourself in the vastness of the universe amidst a breathtaking natural setting at night. Stargazing in the darkest place in Austria.
The upper Kaunertal is one of the darkest places in Austria and therefore offers an incredibly vast starry sky, the likes of which you can’t really see anywhere else anymore. The Kaunertal Glacier Panorama Road provides safe access to a magical spot amidst a mountain landscape shaped by glacial ice at around 2,000 metres above sea level: the Gepatsch in the Kaunertal.
Here, away from the cities and far from the glare of artificial light, you can experience an unforgettable, profound glimpse of the dark night sky, the history of the universe, and even the passage of time.
Guided by experts, you will learn to identify stars and constellations and discover the significance of the stars for humanity, for our sense of direction, and for the emergence of stories and worldviews. Signs of the times in the Kaunertal, our galaxy and the universe will offer you new insights into dimensions that stretch the limits of the imagination.
To round off the evening, a stop at the Gepatschhaus, Austria’s oldest Alpine Club hut, offers the perfect setting to reflect on the day’s experiences.
Night-time get-togethers on the world's most beautiful cul-de-sac!
Night-time guided tours led by professionally trained starguides are available. Between August and September, a guided tour takes place once a week – provided conditions are dark enough and the sky is clear. In the event of unsuitable weather conditions, an optional indoor programme is available. Here, visitors can take part in interactive experiments to discover how planets move along their orbits and the laws they follow, how our solar system is structured at a glance, and how the seasons come about.
The project aims to raise awareness about curbing and reducing light pollution, both for the sake of biodiversity and for the benefit of people’s own circadian rhythms.
