the kaunertal
On the path towards a climate-friendly alpine region
A holiday natural and unspoilt
Pristine alpine landscapes, blooming wildflower meadows, and fragrant forests. In the Tyrolean Kaunertal, the magic of the mountains is yours to feel.
For decades, the Kaunertal has pursued a careful balance of ecological, socio-cultural, and economic development, haped and driven by the people who call it home. The destination evolves gently, authentically, and without artifice. As the home of Austrian Federal President, Alexander van der Bellen, the Kaunertal builds on its natural strengths and offers holiday moments that are refreshingly genuine.
The region is currently designated a CLEAN ALPINE REGION (CLAR), under which concrete initiatives for environmentally conscious tourism are being implemented. Many of the region's exemplary environmental projects have gained recognition far beyond Tyrol.
Working to improve our quality of life
To the Kaunergrat Nature Park Museum & the Kaunertal Glacier by eShuttle
From June to October, the 'CLAR KAUNERGRAT NATURPARK E-Shuttle' links the valley with the popular Kaunergrat Nature Park Museum and extends southward to the Kaunertal Glacier. Remarkably, it is the first electrically operated minibus in alpine terrain in the entire Alpine region.

Mountain Freedom: The Alps Without Barriers
Accessibility is at the heart of the Kaunertal experience. Whether you arrive with a pram, a hip prosthesis, or a wheelchair, a genuine taste of alpine freedom is waiting for you.
Hosts make the switch: renewable energy instead of oil
Through the 'Raus aus Öl' (Get Off Oil) initiative, Kaunertal Tourismus is supporting the valley's accommodation providers every step of the way as they switch to climate-friendly heating alternatives - from initial analysis right through to implementation.
Climate Walking Guide
One of a kind: Hiking in the Kaunertal – 'my kind of climate!'
The hiking guide is your ex
pert companion for hiking in the Kaunertal, providing insights into the valley's unique climatic characteristics alongside carefully selected highlights and concrete tips for choosing the right route. Beyond important parameters such as difficulty level, elevation gain, and walking times, the hiking guide includes useful information on aspect, slope orientation, temperature, and the ideal season for each tour. The Kaunertal occupies a special climate zone: sheltered by the surrounding mountains from central Europe's macro-climate, its inner-alpine dry climate creates outstanding conditions for hiking and mountaineering.
Transport options for those travelling by public transport
We are committed to ensuring our guests can travel here in an environmentally friendly way, which is why we expanded the transport options for the Kaunertal on 1 May 2022, including hourly public transport services to and from Feichten.
CLAR Kaunergrat Marketing
The Guest Manual
The marketing activities of the 'Clean Alpine Region' project aim to bring about a shift in the guest profile, working towards a less energy-intensive and more sustainable tourism future. To support this, additional communication measures such as a manual are required to inform guests on-site about the sustainable offerings and already implemented projects, making the region's efforts visible in a clear and concise way. At the same time, the manual is intended to encourage guests to make conscious choices in favour of sustainable offerings and to show them how they can personally contribute during their stay.
Video productions – Brand promotion – Raising awareness
Here you can see, illustrated in pictures, how the glacier and nature park region is seeking to implement its objectives and initiatives through external and internal advertising.
Kaunergrat Nature Park
Kaunergrat Nature Park: A special Protected Sanctuary
The region surrounding the Kaunergrat has been officially recognised as a nature park since 2003. Its characteristic landscape captivates with its pristine beauty, natural and cultural highlights, and countless opportunities to experience and connect with nature. 2021 brought a further milestone: the Kaunergrat mountain ridge was designated a special protected area by the Province of Tyrol - a dramatic, wild, and rugged rock face that rises with impressive force, yet represents a near-natural mountain landscape that has been sustainably shaped by human hands for generations.
Did you know:
- that the Kaunergrat is home to 39 peaks over 3,000 metres?
- that the E5 long-distance hiking trail crosses the Kaunergrat in several stages?
- that around 1,100 species of butterfly can be found on the sun-drenched slopes of Kauns and Kaunerberg?
- that the first sustainable project in the region - the Gallruth irrigation tunnel - was realised over 50 years ago?
- that the largest ibex colony in the Alps calls the Kaunergrat home?
- that the area encompasses wetlands, moorland, pristine natural landscapes, alpine pastures, and Swiss stone pine forests?
