Winter hiking and snowshoeing

Through the snow on tiny and less tiny feet

Winter hiking and snowshoeing are quiet, contemplative pastimes for the whole family. And a romantic alternative to skiing in Kaunertal.

”Snowmotion” away from trails and slopes in the middle of a beautiful wintry landscape: Many hiking routes (most of them accessible) cross Kaunertal – often parallel to the trails –, surrounded by forests, snow and tranquility. On these paths, Nordic Winter Walking also becomes a sporty pleasure - a Nordic Walking school teaches you the right and most effective technique on Mondays, Wednesdays and on Fridays.

And where the paths end, your snowshoes will smooth the way. Some of the most beautiful snowshoe hikes - including guided tours in the weekly programme - take you deep inside the Kaunergrat nature park, such as to Verpeil mountain hut, Aifner lodge or Falkauns lodge. The Naturparkhaus is an ideal starting point for your fun in the snow on foot or in your “yeti shoes” - Piller Sattel offers a round hiking route with great views.

Winter programme at Kaunergrat nature park

Special winter scout tours for kids are also offered at the nature park. Get out into nature with mountain guides, biologists, hunters and farmers in the Kaunergrat nature park and discover the magic of winter and of life in the wintry forest. The nature park winter programme includes something for everyone - for smaller and bigger snow fans alike! The Naturparkhaus Kaunergrat at Piller Sattel is fully accessible. Do not miss out on its interesting interactive exhibition ”3,000 m vertical” for the whole family and the unique view “Gachen Blick”!

To warm up, stop for a bite to eat at one of the many quaint restaurants and huts, and revive your spirits with “G‘selchtem”, “Tiroler Kas”, “Krapfen”, “Kiachlen“ and a cup of tea, or with a “Stamperl” of locally distilled liquor.

Horse-drawn sleigh rides

A taste of winters past…

Horse-drawn sleigh rides in the winter landscape of the Kaunertal nature park and glacier region are something for the romantics out there. It doesn’t get much more romantic than this: the horses snort and stamp and make their way through the snow, pulling a sleigh virtually silently behind them. In it, holiday-makers – wrapped up warm in fleecy blankets – enjoy the pleasant tempo and the views of Mother Nature’s beautiful winter.

Horse-drawn sleigh rides are a highlight of any winter holiday in Tyrol. Cuddle up in cosy blankets on a romantic ride or go on a fun family excursion with children – a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the fairy tale winter landscape is always an impressive experience in the fresh mountain air. Franz and his Haflinger horses are inviting you.

Ice-skating and curling

Ice on a stick (and on the lake)

Ice-skating and curling are two of the most enjoyable winter sports on even ground. Try out both in Kaunertal and in its immediate vicinity!

On icy ground: A more than 7,000 m2ice-skating surface awaits at the bathing lake in the nearby holiday resort of Ried in the Tyrolean Oberland. It is one of the region’s largest ice-skating sites – so large that a separate area is dedicated to each sport (including ice-hockey).

Curling is at home in Kaunertal: Thursdays at 7.00 pm on the football pitch in Kauns and Tuesdays from 8.00 pm at the cable car car park in Fendels. Plenty of mulled wine and hot drinks will go round at these cosy-sporty meetings all about the curling stick. Attend the curling nights for free. Enjoy and best of luck hitting those stones!

Have a wonderful winter curling evening in Fendels. Fight for points and recognition in a cosy atmosphere. With mulled wine and hot drinks.
Location: Fendels lift chair park (next to the Erlebnishotel Fendels)
Date: Tuesdays in winter (December to March)
Information: Tel. +43 (0) 5472 64 272, groups should register in advance

Feed wild animals

“Wild” life in winter

can be frugal for many animals in Tyrol. They must survive the cold season with only meagre supplies of food and require much calm and undisturbed areas to withdraw to. Feedings are a way for humans to help animals through this rough time. The Schranz family In Fendels even maintains its own wildlife enclosure. There, guests can watch wildlife being fed (for free). Wednesdays at 4.00 pm, Bambi and his friends meet for the party.

Location: Fendels - Schranz Guesthouse, No. 28
Date: Wednesdays from 4.00 pm
